When you photograph a face, you photograph the soul behind it.
~ Jean-Luc Godard
My interest in portraiture is best described by Wikipedia which defines a portrait as a painting, photograph, sculpture, or other artistic representation of a person, in which the face and its expression is predominant. The intent is to display the likeness, personality, and even the mood of the person. For this reason, in photography, a portrait is generally not a snapshot, but a composed image of a person in a still position. A portrait often shows a person looking directly at the painter or photographer, in order to most successfully engage the subject with the viewer.
For me, capturing people in various moods and settings reveals things that go beyond a mere picture. I feel that I am capturing their persona and binding them in a time capsule, which many years or decades later will take them, and me, back to the same memories, locations, and situations. People captured here will grow older and the happiness of seeing themselves back in the day fulfills the purpose of my interest!
